New Year Make Over for Park – Round Two at Jack Roper Reserve
15.12.2013 Cleanup at Jack Roper Reserve
On 15 December, over 40 volunteers rolled up their sleeves again at the Jack Roper Reserve for another cleanup. This cleanup was the 2165th part of the ‘Worldwide Environmental Cleanup Campaign’ carried out by the World Mission Society Church of God. It was for the commemoration of the Birth of Christ Ahnsahnghong. The Hon Maria Vamvakinou MP attended the event and encouraged the goodwill and efforts of church volunteers, saying, “It is great that you are here this morning on this campaign, being Good Samaritans for people and for the planet. Making this manifestation of Christian faith is very important because it gives a reference point to others. I am sure when you finish here today, the Jack Roper Reserve which is actually a very beautiful place, will be absolutely wonderful.”
The cleanup focussed on the lake shore, jetty and bush area where a lot of wastes were piled. Wastes collected through the cleanup included heavy metal waste such as a scooter, a five meter fence, shopping trolley, rusted road signs and poles. There was also hard rubbish (many tyres, chairs, blanket etc), and around 25 bags of garbage filled with plastic, bottles, cans, food wrappers and cigarette butts.
The Church of God members dedicated their time during this busy holiday season focusing on community services, doing a lot of hard work. Their wish was to unite the community through keeping parks clean to prepare for the coming New Year.
A member from the Church named Diana said “New Year is very important for Australians. We value family time and are proud of our clean water in Melbourne. I am so happy to be part of the positive action group protecting our environment in such a tangible way!”
